Group Three: May 2027
Former Doric Quartet violist Hélène Clément and JACK Quartet cellist Jay Campbell lead a sextet of exceptional Marlboro string players in this tour program that surveys different musical styles and trends from the 20th century. The evening begins with Strauss’s elegant, late Romantic String Sextet from Capriccio and continues with Schoenberg’s String Trio—a deeply personal single movement piece depicting his near fatal heart attack. The second half of the evening offers Kurtág’s postmodern 12 Microludes and Bartók’s first string quartet, which reveals a blend of longing and nostalgia with emerging modernism.
