Applications

Auditions for Marlboro Music are typically held in New York City and are scheduled as positions become available, usually every-other year for string instruments, every 2-3 years for wind instruments, and annually for voice and piano.

Because of limited space in our audition schedule, musicians are invited to audition on the basis of a preliminary recording.

Our 2018 season will take place from June 24 to August 12 on the campus of Marlboro College in Vermont, and we plan to announce our complete audition schedule by mid-October 2017. In the meantime, please see below for more information for each instrument category. PIANO AUDITIONS

Piano auditions will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the Rose Studio, 10th Floor of the Rose Building (165 W. 65th Street, New York, New York). Pianists are invited to audition for our committee on the basis of preliminary recordings.

PIANO PRELIMINARY RECORDING REPERTOIRE
Your recordings (MP3/similar files or YouTube/similar links accepted) should include at least:

  • One work by Haydn or Mozart
  • One work by Beethoven, Schubert, or Schumann

All materials from pianists should be received by Friday, November 10, 2017. Auditions will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so pianists are encouraged to apply early. While electronic submissions are preferred, you may also send a printed copy and CD to:

Auditions for double bass will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at the Rose Studio, 10th Floor of the Rose Building (165 W. 65th Street, New York, New York). To apply, please submit an application form to [email protected] Applications must be received by Monday, November 27, 2017, and applicants will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

DOUBLE BASS AUDITION REPERTOIRE

  • Solo Portion
    One movement of your choice from a Cello Suite by J.S. Bach
    AND
    One work in a contrasting style, from the accompanied or unaccompanied repertoire
  • Chamber Music Portion
    Please prepare the complete double bass part to the following works:
    Prokofiev, Quintet for Oboe, Clarinet, and Strings, Op. 39
    AND
    Schubert, Octet in F major, D. 803

VIOLA AND CELLO AUDITIONS

Auditions for viola and cello will be held at the Rose Studio, 10th Floor of the Rose Building (165 W. 65th Street, New York, New York), on the following dates:

Viola January 4 and 5, 2018
Cello January 5 and 6, 2018

Applicants will be scheduled for audition on the basis of a preliminary recording. Please submit an application form, as well as at least two recordings of your playing in contrasting styles. Our panel asks that you send solo works from the accompanied or unaccompanied repertoire (concertos, sonatas, suites, etc) rather than chamber music for this preliminary round.

Materials should be received no later than Friday, November 17, 2017 and should be submitted electronically to [email protected] (or via Dropbox or another sharing site) if possible. While electronic submissions are preferred, you may send hard copies via mail instead to Marlboro Music Admissions/1528 Walnut Street, Suite 301/Philadelphia, PA 19102.

Each string applicant will be notified of the result of their recording submission by December 11, 2017.

VIOLA AUDITION REPERTOIRE

  • Solo Portion
    Two contrasting movements from a work of J.S. Bach (any solo suite, sonata, or partita)
    AND
    Two contrasting movements (one slow, one fast) from any sonata or concerto
  • Chamber Music Portion
    Please prepare the complete viola part to the following movements:
    W.A. Mozart, Quintet in E-flat major, K. 614: movements 2 & 4 (Viola I)
    AND
    R. Schumann, String Quartet in A major, Op. 41 no. 3: movements 3 & 4

CELLO AUDITION REPERTOIRE

  • Solo Portion
    First movement of one of the following works:

    Dvorak, Concerto in B minor, Op. 104
    Schumann, Concerto A minor, Op. 129
    Haydn, Concerto in D major, Hob.VIIb:2

VOCAL AUDITIONS

Vocal auditions will be held on Friday, December 15, 2017, at the Rose Studio, 10th floor of the Rose Building (165 W. 65th Street, New York, NY). Applications are currently being accepted for mezzo-soprano, tenor, and bass/baritone.

Auditions will be scheduled on the basis of preliminary recordings, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates are encouraged to apply on or before Friday, November 17th.

To Apply:

Please send audio or video recordings of two to four art songs in contrasting styles and languages to [email protected], along with an application form. While art song examples are preferred, arias will also be accepted.

VOCAL AUDITION REPERTOIRE

1) A total of five songs in the following languages:

  • Two songs in German
  • One song in French
  • One song in English
  • One song in a language of your choice

2) Two arias, one of which should be by W.A. Mozart

FLUTE AUDITIONS

Flute auditions will be held on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 at the Rose Studio, 10th Floor of the Rose Building (165 W. 65th Street, New York, New York).

Flutists will be scheduled for audition on the basis of preliminary video recordings, which must be received by Friday, December 8th along with an application form.

Preliminary flute recordings should include at least:

  • Expositions of the first and second movements of either the G major (K. 313) OR D major (K. 314) Flute Concerto by W.A. Mozart; and
  • Two movements in differing tempos from a contrasting work of your choice. If presenting a one-movement work for your contrasting piece, please select something that displays the full range of your musicianship in at least two distinct tempos and moods.

Our panel asks that any accompanied works be recorded with piano (or accompanying ensemble).

FLUTE AUDITION REPERTOIRE

  • Solo Portion

    Debussy, Syrinx for solo flute

    PLUS

    Two contrasting pieces of your choice, including one piece from the standard repertoire of your choice, and one contemporary work of your choice (see suggestions below). Accompanied or unaccompanied repertoire is equally fine.

CLARINET AUDITIONS

Clarinet auditions will be held on Monday, January 8th, 2018 at the Rose Studio, 10th Floor of the Rose Building (165 W. 65th Street, New York, New York).

To apply, clarinetists should submit an application form, which must be received no later than Friday, November 17th.

CLARINET AUDITION REPERTOIRE

  • Solo Portion
    Two solo pieces of your choice (including one contemporary work and one piece from the standard repertoire). Accompanied or unaccompanied repertoire is equally fine.

  • Chamber Music Portion

    Please prepare the clarinet part for all of the following movements/excerpts:
    Schubert, Octet in F major, D. 803: movements 1 & 2
    Bartók, Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano: MM. 1-26, MM. 85- the end
    Brahms, Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in B minor, Op. 115: movements 1 and 2
    Mozart, Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in A major, K. 581: movements 1 and 2
